Insurance & Documentation Appraisals

Our formal appraisal service provides a detailed written document describing your jewelry, its materials, gemstones, and replacement value.

  • Appraisals are $150 per piece.
  • Complimentary for jewelry purchased from Champaign Jewelers.
  • Items must be brought to like-new condition before appraisal (we’ll advise if cleaning or repair is needed).
  • Most appraisals are completed on-site, though select pieces may be sent to our trusted appraisal partners for specialty verification.

Estate Assessments & Jewelry Sorting

Not every piece needs a full written appraisal. Sometimes you just need to know what’s fine jewelry, what’s costume, and what might be worth appraising.

  • $150/hour (time is prorated — many sessions take less than an hour)
  • Appointment required

This is a great option for inherited collections, “mystery” jewelry boxes, or organizing pieces before an estate is settled.

Gemstone Identification

As a Graduate Gemologist, Kari can help determine the identity of your gemstone — whether it's natural, synthetic, or an imitation.

  • $120 per session when done as a standalone service.
  • Included at no extra charge within a formal appraisal.

This service is ideal if you've inherited loose stones, purchased an unverified gem, or simply want peace of mind about what you have.

Our Commitment to Accuracy & Transparency

Every piece we appraise is evaluated using professional gemological tools, current market data, and detailed documentation standards.

Our goal is to ensure your jewelry is properly represented and protected — never over- or under-valued.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Most insurance companies recommend updating your appraisal every 3–5 years to make sure replacement values stay accurate with current metal and gemstone markets.

If you’ve made changes to the piece (like resetting, resizing, or adding stones), you’ll want a fresh appraisal sooner.

  • We’re happy to help you understand your options — but we don’t purchase most jewelry for resale.

We’re not a secondhand retailer, so unless your item is a truly unique vintage or antique piece that we can send to one of our trusted estate resale partner vendors, we usually don’t have an avenue to resell finished jewelry as-is.

    What we do buy:

    • Gold and silver for scrap melt value

    • Loose diamonds that meet minimum size/quality thresholds

If you’re looking to sell a piece of jewelry rather than melt it, we can help you evaluate what you have and offer honest guidance about whether it’s better suited for an estate buyer, a private sale, or a full appraisal.

Our goal is to make sure you fully understand the value and best path forward — even if the next step isn’t with us.

  • Insurance appraisals list a replacement value, which reflects what it would cost to replace the item new today.

Resale value is different — it’s what the piece might sell for on the secondary market, which is almost always lower.

We’re happy to explain the difference during your appointment so you know what to expect.

  • Most appraisals require time for detailed documentation, measurements, photography, and gem testing.

While we do the majority of our appraisals in-house, they are not usually same-day services.

We’ll give you a clear timeframe at your appointment based on the piece.
